A weird audio distortion bug
Captain's Log: Stardate 77456.5
Compressors are now working quite well. They're pretty basic, but do the job. I'm pleased with the 3D visuals for them -- the microphones now glow blue proportionally to how much compression is active, so it's fairly easy to tune the threshold, etc. (Not as good as a time-series display like the compressor in Ableton, but much better than nothing and plus it looks cool in 3D.) The GUI for the compressors is in-place and everything works with saving/loading/etc.
Sadly... there is a weird audio distortion bug. It started a few days ago, before I began work on the compressors. 😠Every once in a while, there will be a weird distortion for 2-3 seconds and then it goes away. A couple of times I thought maybe I accidentally fixed it, because I wouldn't hear it for a long time. But then today I heard it again.
I loaded up Ableton and recorded Anukari's output with some random inputs for a couple hours, and it never happened. This is pretty much the worst-case scenario: it's super rare and I don't have a good repro case. So I can't just bisect the last week of commits to see where it was introduced.
At this point my brain is too fried to think about a subtle bug like this, so that will wait for tomorrow. I'm just hoping that I can find something that at least makes the distortion more likely to occur, so I can start reproducing it.
(I was actually planning to start outlining my next video tomorrow until I remembered The Bug. But hopefully I'll discover the cause quickly and then I'll start the video.)
